The defendant engaged in a "treat game" with the youngsters, Mrs Prior said, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were settling down and tell them to eat sweets "rapidly".

She told the court the defendant had engaged in this activity with the children "over an extended period", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

The legal counsel said objects including lubricant, petroleum jelly and syringes were located, and his stepchild contacted the law enforcement about his concerns.

She explained the defendant went on to engage in the "treat game" with six boys that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the subsequent day.
