Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
